Tata Sky launches Tata Sky+ HD at just Rs. 3999/

Hi All ,

I am new to this forum and also new to Home theater world. My question is around quality sound / surround / 5.1 . Before I explain my problem , here's my setup

Display
Sony Bravia LCD 32 - NX500

HTIB
Sony - DAV-DZ-810

TATA SKY PLUS HD - ( got it on last thursday , earlier I had SD Tata sky )

Connections:

DVD/receiver -> HDMI->Sony LCD
DVD/Receiver -> RCA ( 2 pin red and white audio cable ) -> Sony LCD
TATA SKY+ HD - HDMI-> Sony LCD
TATA SKY+ HD ->Optical -> DVD/receiver

until tata sky hd came into picture , I was getting awsome sound at least for the DVDs I played. I used to experience awsome surround as well..ofcourse tv channels audio wasnt that impressive.

now, I dont know why but there is no surround or good 5.1 sound when i play dvds e.g. transforme, aviator , the kingdome etc.. it appears that majority of the sound is being handled only by the center speaker. There is a sound in other four speakers but its very very low even though volume is at 24-25 ( max is 30 ) .

Also , when i take channel volume ( using tata sky remote ) to minimum ( i.e. ) audio is not coming through home theater ( it works only when i increase audio on tata sky remote ) but HD channel audio work fine through home theater when audio is at minimum ( through tata sky remote ) . though sound quality is not that good.

Could you please tell me if there is anything wrong with connections / setup etc..?
I am not expecting amzing sound from TV/tata sky but DVDs should return DD and surround..

Thanks in advance for your inputs.

India-Bangladesh in HD on Star Cricket HD is looking awesome... sound also in true Dolby Digital 5.1... crowd sound coming in surround motion predominantly from back speakers like you are in stadium...

Did anybody notice that Volume Control does not work for Channels with Dolby, when connected to the AVR?
Need to use the AVR's Remote for volume for those channels. (Star Cricket HD, Nat Geo HD and Discovery HD).

Dude this is off topic, however is your DVD/receiver the same? If yes you need to check with the manufacturer what is going on.

That is because the DD stream gets transferred to the AVR unadulterated. Hence volume control on STB will not work. Only if STB is decoding the stream, volume control can work (like it should work in HDMI as its passing PCM and RCA LR).

I am one of those UNFORTUNATE ones who agreed to get the connection the first day it was launched, the sales persons (I registered twice with my 2 mobile numbers) both disappeared after they understood that I am their soft target.

FILTHY as we must say, I have seen this attitude of sales team when they see that the customer is ready to pay for the product and hence they come to their mercy and they spend their time to LURE other customer who are tougher to be convinced!

First lady called and wanted me to generate OTP through SMS and call in 15 mins, only to disappear. I have for the 3rd time "prebooked" day before, still haven't got any call till date.

Now they want us to pay Rs.50 for the HD pack and they are not offering 2 months of HD pack as they may not provide HD pack for 2 month as they assured initially.

Well i got my tata sky installed after issuing cancellation threat after 8 days
...then they didn't activate my free hd gold pack.....Now HD gold pack is activated but 1 month free grand pack is not done

In order to achieve this i called CC number of times and finally asked for a Supervisor.....She activated Gold pack in 1 min after i showed my anger...

This is just a quick review of the tata sky + HD box

1. Good UI
2. No issues with the recording/resume recording after powercut...I've tried 2 channels recording simultaneously
3. Live pause, rewind etc works without issues
4. Discovery HD and Nat Geo HD are damn good....(Not Blu-ray quality yet but pretty close)
5. SD channels seem better...Star Plus HD does look better in HD (It
's not quite like Discovery HD and Nat Geo though)
6. ICC WC in HD looks very good though in terms of HD qualityi found Discovery and Nat Geo marginally better)

Cons
2. Remote is too big
3. Doesn't carry DD+ signal as advertised as coax/optical is used for sound not HDMI 1.3+
3. Service was poor...The CC don't know anything(and they are supposed to be best CC in DTH companies!!)

I also ordered my 2nd box on wednesday; not delivered till today; lodged a complaint today and took a complaint no.; lets see...

Did anyone else notice this? The Volume control on the set top box does not affect the volume if you are using the digital optical to the receiver.
Mute works.
But I have to change the volume from my receiver remote.

When I connect using analog direct to TV, the STB volume control works just fine, I would think HDMI audio may also be working. Others?

Tata Sky+ HD is only available in the metros. Not in any other cities.

Is the Airtel DVR HD capable? It does not say so on their website.

How much extra will I have to pay to watch the World Cup in HD on Airtel or Tata? I have Sun HD at present and they are charging Rs 12,000 which is absurd!

If Star Plus was encoded using MPEG4 at the same SD resolution using the same bandwidth, I BET it would looks better. These DTH providers are taking us for a ride by showing inferior quality compressed SD channels and "upscaling" them to HD with better compression to make us believe that it does help. BEWARE.

I don't feel we have DD+ signals from any HD channels yet in India, however I agree they have to resolve this BUG of not passing through DD signal through HDMI ASAP. Lets keep escalating till they resolve.

Manu, it will NEVER work as DD signals are passed as "DATA" to your receiver and "volume" can be applied only to DECODED PCM Audio (through LR Composite or HDMI if it passes PCM as it is currently). I have already replied in the same thread. Please refrain from posting duplicate questions.

I am also in Bangalore and had booked on 9th Feb and am promised an installation by tomorrow. Will escalate if they do not do it even now.

Can someone tell the bitrate TS HD and SD channels are encoded in? Also that of DD5.1?

Are HD channels recorded with original DD5.1 audio? Is there any quality loss on HD and SD channels recording?
