Placed order on 16th Feb 2011. Service folks called and have fixed an appointment for 20th Feb 2011 for installation.
TS folks completed installation on 19th Feb 2011 in the evening!
My TV is a HD ready one (Sony 3LCD Projector). The HD channels are very good. Other channels are as good as my previous TS+. The colors are more prominent now (hdmi effect?) trying to do play with the settings to get one suitable.

Hi guys,

Yes you can. My tv too is HD ready and the picture quality in HD is fantastic. You just need to have a HDMI interface in your tv. About Onkyo - please check the previous posts - there is some issue with DD in TS HD+ only, which used to work fine in TS HD.

Thks for your quick reply.

I will be ordering tata sky HD and would advise comments.:)

Is the sound quality of the cricket HD channels actually good? I find the 5.1 sound extremely distracting. The commentary seems to randomly shift from the center channel to the surround channels and back.

It's a tad annoying isn't it? Only upside is that the picture quality is brilliant and of course, no ads!
It is obvious that the ICC World Cup coverage by ESPN is not in 5.1 surround sound. Instead the sound engineers are creating a pseudo surround mix by fading and crossing audio from front to back channels. You are right about it being quite annoying.

Yes, stereo is much better than simulated 5.1. But the picture quality of Star cricket HD and ESPN HD is amazing :clapping: I have changed the resolution from 1080i to 720p to improve the speed. Anyone knows what is the actual resolution before it gets scaled up by the HD+ box?
All HD channels in India are natively being broadcast in 1920x1080i resolution. Thus, it would be best to set the set-top box to output 1920x1080i and let your TV do any scaling that may be required. Reason for this is that most likely the scaler in your TV is superior to the scaler in the cheapo set-top box.

Is there any way to visually determine who is doing better upscaling between TV and AVR? Any specific artifacts to look for?

In case your TV is FULL HD, ie. 1920x1080, then you should in any case set the set-top box to output 1920x1080i. Only if your TV is 720P only, that you should even consider setting the set-top box to output 1280x720p. To answer your question, the only way is to switch settings on the set-top box between 1280x720p and 19201080i and see the results on your TV for yourself. IF you are unable to make out the difference, then I would suggest you simply leave the setting at 1920x1080i.

This is utter annoyance like Nat Geo HD. Lets ask TS to pass regular stereo instead if they could not properly broadcast in 5.1.

Atleast on Dish TV Nat Geo HD and Star Cricket HD is broadcasted in excellent picture and sound quality though without DD.

After seeing various posts of the forum members, I got attracted by the Tata Sky offer of Rs.3,999 for the PVR box and Rs.5,301 for one year subscription to the Mega Package. On 14th Feb. I contacted their customer service and paid Rs.9,300 on line thru my credit card. The marketing executive Mr. Ashwin assured me that the set top box will be installed within 48 hours. That's when my troubles began.

When nothing happened even after 48 hours I contacted the customer service again 4 days in a row. Each time I was put on hold for 30 to 45 minutes. Finally on Feb. 18th I learnt from one of their franchisees/dealers that Tata Sky was short of set top boxes. If I was willing to pay a premium, then they would divert one box to me which was meant for another customer. I promptly called their customer service centre and gave them a piece of my mind. I didnt expect this type of a behaviour from a Tata company. I told them that if I have to pay a premium, then to cancel the order. Within one hour their representative came and installed the dish and the set top box. There was no mention of a premium to be paid.

Then the next problem started. I kept getting SMSs that I have to pay Rs.1,302 or my service would be halted. Finally on 21st Feb. I contacted their customer service and lodged a complaint. I gave them my customer ID and the order confirmation that their sales executive had given me on Feb.14th. They had no clue about my order and said that they will get back to me. I wanted the telephone no. and address of their grievance officer so that I could lodge a formal complaint. I was adviced that I should send an e-mail to [email protected]. I promptly sent off a complaint.

Meanwhile another executive - Mr. Stephen called to say that there was a mix up at their end and he would sort out the problem in 48 hours. I told him that was Ok but not to send anymore SMSs saying that I have to pay Rs.1,302. All this to no avail. Promptly on 22nd Feb. they disconnected my service.

I don't think the Tata Sky people are organized to take care of the customer complaints. They routinely listen to the complaints and do what they think is right. To give an example, I get an SMS at 9:37 PM on 21st Feb. saying that they will respond to my query by 5:45 PM on 21stFeb.

I don't know if any other forum member had to go thru such tribulations. But I would like them to be careful when dealing with executives of Tata Sky.

Thanks

P.N. Reddy

i bought a tata sky hd + box from chennai and i need to install it in trichy. during the time of purchase they only asked me to buy from chennai and that installation can be done in trichy.

now when i scheduled for installation after buying the box, the installation guy from trichy calls me and tells that he is not trained to install hd + box and that he'll talk to his superior. after 5 mins he calls me and tells his superior told him not to go and install as it is not yet launched in trichy. is there any difference in the installation of tata sky + hd compared to any other boxes.? im a new subscriber.

i've raised the issue with customer care and they said some higher ups will contact me within 4 hrs

Not sure about the sound quality, but TataSky PQ is absolute perfect. I have seen Dish TV and Airtel HD broadcast as well and TataSky PQ is better by pretty fair margin. Also the SQ is not crap is just that its not in proper 5.1 for Cricket HD, which is understandable, as that is live audio and live audio must be having enough technical challenges (if not impossible) to be broad-casted in real 5.1. Once turned to stereo, its better perceived...... ..... Plus Discover HD does have proper 5.1 DD audio.

got my TS HD+ installed on Saturday. I didn't order through CC but took it from Dealer

Price of STB : 3900 . No free months packeage
So I have taken Megapack for 6K

This guy came for installation in some other house. I asked if whether he has one more extra box. He is ready to give it to me for 3900.

Cricket in HD is superb I am not sure about the sound quality as I dont have AVR.
Other HD channels are good. I have Samsung 40" Full HD TV

Will the PQ be improved by using optical cable?? Right now it is connected to HDMI

^
dear, pq has nothing to do with optical cable; thats for sound output ONLY... hdmi is the best source for picture as well as sound quality though the tatasky+ cable is not of the highest standards but is sufficient seeing the box capabilities; going for a better hdmi cable wont give you any better picture quality on this box (I have personally tried)

Thanks dkaile for clarification. Since I dont have AVR and am using only TV speakers as of now, by connecting the optical cable will the sound quality improved??

^
does your tv have optical sound input??? I dont think do... I presume it must be having a optical output only... so hdmi will be best...

Actually, you are better off setting your tv to 1080i regardless of the TV -res. Reason being that TS+HD box does a horrible job of de-interlacing the signal. Your TV does a better job. I Set mine to 720p and started noticing a lot of interlacing artifacts, esp with SD channels. So I reverted back to 1080i.
