Jan 2013 Delhi/Gurgaon NCR Audiophile Meet

Do not think we would have sufficient time with us if all this available for any worthwhile auditions to happen .... :indifferent14:.

Would suggest Ashish to bring in just about two amps and two speakers of his choice, whichever he feels good with. With the two Mumbai suppliers coming in with their own gear ... a similar request to them too! Since, other than the 3 suppliers, we would have individual set-ups playing too .... And yes, we do have Virenji's combos too. Really do not wish 'too much' becoming a bottleneck during the day.

Some suggestions from the seasoned Puneites solicited in this matter!

A few days ago I had suggested the same thing... we should plan the event more formally. Imagine a conference or seminar or exhibition. Planning the time required for each demonstration or combination. There's is no harm in declining those components which are common and mostly heard. For example, if we all feel that exposure is not required to be brought, it should not be brought (but you all must hear it! :-))...

We will have to imagine the progression of the meet and sort of make a time chart...

Just my 2 cents..

Good to see the progress here. Here is my two paise.

(1) We do need name cards for such a large group. Otherwise we will all spend the whole day just asking each other's names. Worst, it will be easy to forget and mistake one for another. Name cards will take away all the hesitation. People will be able to interact with each with much greater ease.

(2) I am very glad Ashish (Lakozy) has kindly agreed to bring tons of gear. However, I would caution against overdoing it. The idea is to have some fun with gear FMs posses too. Lest it should become a mini hifi exhibition rather than being a meet.

Sure, it will be nice to have more gear to look at and inquire the prices etc. But too many setups will create confusion (with the exception of portable gear). Even a dozen portable setups can't create a confusion. People would just go and immerse themselves in the experience. I do applaud Ashish/Lakozy's decision to bring in some portable stuff.

I have half a dozen headphones of audiophile/near audiophile quality. I can contribute in that area if there is an interest.

(3) A planning on time is absolutely in order. And with the kind of gear we are coming up with it will be more chaos than fun if not planned well. Also, I anticipated this much ahead of time. That's the reason why I insisted on having multiple listening areas rather than one big hall. 2-3 listening areas would have increased the usefulness of the meet as times, as it would multiply the gear one can listen to.

(4) Whatever happened to "education" part? We could experiment with cables, interconnects and such. I suppose many people will appreciate having these experiences in order to get out of their tentative mindset. Because as individuals many people do not have enough resources to carry these experiments. Such meets should be used as a resource-pooling exercise for learning purposes.

(5) We still don't have any super-revealing speaker. Very important! Anyone?

I agree completely with Avidyarthy.

I spoke to the Mumbai guys. They're coming in one car with 1 small setup and 1 medium setup. They're mostly coming for fun and not a vendor venture. They want to simply showcase the two setups and not interested in mixing and matching like we would with our individual setups. So we'll just let them showcase their 2 setups for a while and then we'll move on.

Individual setups will take priority over vendor ones. However since Ashish is the primary sponsor, I feel he has some right to demonstrate his gear.

What we can do is we can allot two 30 approx minute slots through the course of the day for him/his helpers to setup and demonstrate lakozy gear as complete setups, rather than mixing and matching like we would with individual setups.

If something really stands out (for example many people are curious to know about naim nait 5) we can request him to allow us to connect and hear it with individuals components for a quick comparison.

It would streamline things more.

Gist:

Primary purpose = education through individual setup mixing and matching and comparisons.
We do slots for specific demonstrations/comparisons
We do 2 slots for Lakozy/sponsor to demonstrate their gear
We have 1 slot for Mumbai people demonstration.

@Ranjeetrain
What would you consider as super revealing? The vendors from mumbai are planning to bring some good gear I believe, but I'm not sure if it would better than the Jamo's in the transparency department.

That sounds like a marketing survey. I'd suggest using a much simpler format.

(1) HFV handle - for printing name card.
(2) Real name (optional, will be printed if provided).
(3) Email address - for communication.
(4) Where and how they'd come from - for ease of car/bike pooling.
(5) Gear they would bring - The list should have what FMs may bring. Final list will be published here.

Something like a DynAudio (Contour series and up), Focal upper range, Cadence upper range, Usher etc. For example; Rahul's Harbeth if he makes it to the meet would be a good speaker to play with. There are many FMs with high-end gear in NCR. Seems like they haven't noticed this thread.

I'm sure many have noticed but i doubt they'd wanna risk taking out several lakhs worth of equipment =(

A reference grade floorstander is something I wanna hear. Have yet to hear any such.
The guys from mumbai are attempting to import a high end floorstander by the 1st week of jan that they want to bring to the meet. I've forgotten the model number they told me. But that might meet the criteria.

Well anyway to make do with what we have, if it makes any difference the concert 8's (2700usd) easily went go head to head with a Dynaudio contour 1.3 mk II (2399usd). And someone I once spoke to who's owned a plethora of floor-standers and bookshelves (Proac Response 1SC, Concert 8, Spendor LS3/5A, Usher BE718, Reference 3A and the Lenehan ML-1) felt the concert 8's sound was the most accurate and reference capable of the lot but not the most musical. It apparently bested the Proac response completely.

So *shrug* guess we'll see at the meet.

I wish someone had a kef q300 for budget sound I'm curious to hear that one.

Why not we create few categories or group them and compare apple with apple and orange with orange from the list of gears listed so far
Just an thought

That's the idea, just haven't gotten around to it yet but it'll happen that way.
I've made a list of the main gear, gonna do some basic pairing of the items and put it up here tomorrow. We can take it from there.

will be carrying about 700 GB of FLAC & Hi-res music... Have Western & Indian Classical, all sorts of Jazz, Classic Rock, Modern Rock, Prog Rock, Alt, a little POP, tonnes of audiophile demonstration discs etc!

I will also be carrying some 10 odd vinyls...

Aha thank you for reminding me, that's the next thing.

For now, two songs I'm sure everyone will agree with to use for reference is

MJ - Thriller
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing

For western classical I'd like to use Swan lake tchaikovsky
For Indian Classical I have no idea what's a well recorded track - any suggestions Malvai?

Alright here we go. Made a gear and time chart for the meet.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuB22hYGtdVxdDJMcDQwZzRpQkZvaVE2T1Z2UGdEQ2c

I've tried to do justice to all our individual gear and vendor+sponsor gear.

I am open to any suggestions.

To compliment the Odyssey I will bring my Berendsen PRE-1 if possible, but can't be sure as of now. It's with me in China and not sure if I can bring it without exceeding my baggage allowance. Besides, W4S DAC 2 has a good analogue output stage. So there is no harm in hooking it directly to the Odyssey.

I will bring Audio Note An Vx silver interconnect , Transparent MusicLink Super interconnect, and Tara Labs Prism Omni Speaker Cable.

I also have jitter-free, 100% accurate rips of many popular and no so popular music. Michael Jackson, Dire Straits, U2, George Michael, Celine Dion, David Foster. Apart from that I can also bring Test/Demo CDs/rips. I also have some great sounding Chinese music which are good for enjoying a setup. If people are interested in hearing some "foren melodies", I'll be happy to bring them.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
