My Pass F5 Build

Mica is not a bad conductor of heat and leather would get charred and would eventually fall apart. The best spacers would be either ceramic or asbestos.

Please do not work with asbestos in any form. It is just too dangerous. Much of the world acknowledges this, but India does not yet. Yes, there are relatively safe compositions, but relatively is not safe enough. Many of the world's insurance companies wish it had never been discovered.

As a cancer specialist can certainly tell you that asbestos in dust form (fine particulate form) leads to the lung disease known as asbestosis and can be precursor of mesothelioma (a cancer of the lining of the lungs i.e. pleura).

A thermosetting plastic like Bakelite (used in electrical equipments) or simple strip of wood (wood burns at > 270 degrees) would perform as a great bad conductor of heat.

Thank you all for your valuable suggestions. I will sandwich it with a layer of wood and see how it performs.

My actual plan was to use 6mm aluminium sheet, but most of the guys i have contacted has asked me to take the full 6x4 sheet. So i changed my plan to experiment with acrylic. I will try to source the panels from Front Panel Express:

I started with the rectifier and CRC power supply and completed populating the power supply section.

Price Breakup for the PSU:
7. Heat Sink for Rectifier - 25 x 8 = 200 INR

Pleased to know that the MUR diodes need not be bolted on to the main heat sinks and can make do with their own small heat sinks.
Completed populating the F5 PCB today

Price Breakup:

1. F5 Kit from Jims Audio = 52.68$
2. 3 Watts 5% Resistors (Panasonic) from Digi-Key = 6.84 $
3. 1/4 Watts 1% Resistors (Vishay Metal Film) from Mouser = 7.8$
4. Nichicon Capacitors (KA Series) = 2.32$
5. EPCOS Thermistors = 1.80$
5. GE Thermistor (CL-60) = 1.41$
6. Shipping & Tax = 7.03$

Total = 79.88$ x 55 INR = 4393 INR

What MOSFETs have been used?

I am using the Fairchild MOSFET.

Very neat and professional work, please post the illuminated F5 on the face plate, F5 in action will look awesome.

How does it sound bibin? :)

Only one word - breathtaking. The front and back panel design is excellent. Please post more pics of the map in action.

There's an old saying about being beautiful on the inside. It was never meant to be about electronics ;) but, hey, this is! What we see of the case looks as if the outside is pretty good-looking too :D

Thank you all for the comments.

There is no humm and really silent. It really heats up and the heat sinks are able to handle it. So far i haven't used any active cooling even after 2hrs of continuous use i don't feel like it does require any active cooling.

Regarding sound, the mids are really good and highs to an extend but low is not that good....may be due to the low gain of the design. I feel like B1 is not a good match for this.

Me and Bijin compared this with Hiraga Le Monstre and both of us like the sound of Hiraga Le Monstre than F5.

I think it will be a good match with my next project Frugel-Horn Mk3 with Fostex FE-126EN.

@Sann,@baijuxavior, Sure i will post more images.

Thanks,
Bibin

Exactly my impression of the F5.It sounded a bit lifeless.

But the F5T goes deep while maintaining the upper & mid of the vanilla F5

Bibin,

Great build. What speakers are you using to connect to F5. The sound profile of F5 will be different and if you have not heard before you will find it tilting a lot more to mid and highs. But the fact that is it has lot more detail in high and mid than other amps gives you that impression. Listen to it for a few days across your favourite tracks and then listen to other amps afterwards and see what you think.

Cheers.
