Which CDP to buy

Hi Amit
You may like to look at Richer Sounds - The UK's Hi-Fi, Home Cinema & Flat Panel TV Specialists! to compare street prices. Though there may be warranty issues etc, there are some fantastic deals on CA/ nad/ marantz products.
I have a nad C542 that a lot of people recommended and hence I purchased it. I like the sound but do not have any ready comparison with any other decent product.

I think hdd player is the way to go. I have purchased extreamer but it has pathetic music playing interface. Plus the digital out is not bit perfect (not sure how does that really matter practically). I did try playing some songs through analog out and sound quality isn't completely trash. It is listenable to me, though there are some differences with nad cdp, but can't say too much for sure. Since I have recently shifted my house, not everything is setup very well. I hope things get settled soon, and then maybe I can do an A/B.
I HOPE the xtreamer will get better in some firmware release - but right now it seems a couple years the way things are happening on xtreamer forum. But squeezebox should be much better than xtreamer - just an assumption.

regards
Anant

from Marantz European catalogue, I can see that CD6003 and CD8003 both got USB . Are these same functionality? Can we directly pug a memory stick and play it?
How much is the best price for CDP 6003 in India?

Hi Amit,

I do not know about Creek, but Delhi area sure has an Arcam dealer. Is there a Soundofmusic or something like that in Delhi? I think I talked to the guy once. They are dealers of Arcam. I once even talked to the national distributor of Arcam, and if I am not too mistaken, they are also from Delhi or the neighboring areas. Correct me folks, if I am wrong.

Regards.

Arcam are distributed by xproindia.com (Xpro Global Ltd., F'bad).

Sound of Music (Mr. Faisal), N - 61, GK - 1 is a dealer (9810050300).

Arcam were earlier distributed by the Cadence people, but discontinued as their transports could not handle the indian dust conditions and, since volumes were low, warranty, etc., were issues.

The above are as per my last info and interaction, e&oe.

Check out A2V @Saket Select City Walk for options, though you MAY not buy from them owing to their markups. They have a decent setup and listening room.

Transports were a problem for Sony PC DVD writers as well - for the same reason, with huge stacks of their products piling up for RMA at the disties.

Just FYI

Hi

My speaker+amp combo selection has undergone last minute change to BE-718 + Leben C300xs. I have not gone for BE-718 + Operetta + Lyrita Pre as I wanted to keep my system simple and of less weight. Moreover, Leben + BE-718 pair was auditioned by me and I liked the sound. The BE-718 + Operetta +Lyrita Pre might have been also a good choice, but I prefer not to take chance and stick to what I have auditioned. Dinyar discouraged Operetta and suggested me to go for an SS integrated. Three people have encouraged me towards Leben - Asit, Sridhar and Arjun. ROC also told my decision awesome. Thanks to you all.

Now, obviously my total budget of speaker+amp+CDP gets consumed for speaker & amp only. Leben is such a sweet charmer, one gets mesmerised and loosen his purse string.

I have to allocate money for CDP cutting the budget for other non-music items. Very tough time...

Till such time, I will have to place the BE-718+Leben in my bedroom and listen using PC as the source. Luckily my PC has Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card and hope to get decent performance.

When I will be shifting the system to drawing room in future, I will have to arrange for a source. In Mar'10 I will get the second laptop from my office. My choice this time is Apple Macbook (The first one was from hp and it is now used by my elder son for on-line tests for CPT exam). I have to go for a good DAC and connect with Macbook. For connecting with DAC, whether I will need any sound streamer. or Macbook can be connected directly with DAC? I am absolutely novice.

So my next thread will be 'Which DAC to buy?'. Offcourse, I will keep my eyes open on the threads regarding DAC. Again, what I am going to have as my audio set-up is solely for this beautiful forum HFV. This forum has large number of very supportive and helpful guys to help and guide newbies like me.
Cheers
Amit

Though a nice unit - don't even bother since the Sanyo transport used is totally obsolete!! Not a single optical lens available.... I have a 540 stacked-up in its box which you can have free to cannibalize stuff out of it.

Thanks Audio, will wait for a better CDP. My bro is is coming from dubai in Dec/Jan. Any suggestions for a good CDP in 10k range? or can we get good USB DACs in dubai?

cooltoad, for 10k budget, you can try to get the Marantz cd5001/5003 from Dubai.

Thanks Iaudio, that's what i was thinking(5003 as it has mp3 support), but how about Pioneer dv610 for SQ? or Cambridge dv99 as compared to marantz cdp. I think Rallynut has dv99. Would like to know his opinion reg SQ.

I think it would be Cd5003 first in SQ closely followed by DV99. The Pioneer would lag behind. Check out the chennai audio source shoot out thread.

Iaudio, wanted to check with you since you're gonna buy dv610. BTW, will be interesting to know from you how the line out of cowon d2 performs with flac files?

Cooltoad, The Pio Dv610 will most probably used with a DAC, with the Pio optical out feeding the DAC input.

As for the Cowon, within the limit of using an AVR( I use a Onkyo 506), it was a good performer with flac playback, better than laptop,pc. I cant make an accurate judgement without using it with a stereo amp though.
SQ through headphones though was awesome to say the least! And this I can say after simultaneously using D2,Creative Xfi, Ipod Nano etc.

Again I am pretty impressed using cPlay with my laptops onboard sound. So hope to improve on it with the intro of DAC in the chain.

I have got an offer for an used Primare CD21. Will it be a good match with my system (Leben cs300xs & Usher BE-718)? I will use Audioart IC-3 interconnect and TDK speaker cables. My preferred music - vocal (Don williams, Lionel Richie, Kenny Rogers, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Eagle, Bee Gees, Diana Ross, Carpenter, Celine Dion, Katie Melua), Instruments (Guitar, Piano, Saxofone, violin). I have budget constraints and can afford 40k max.

Hi Amit
Maybe you can tell Sridhar to help you locate a used Arcam FM-17 or 33 if it comes in your price
Not heard the cdp but many praise the Arcam sound so suggested it
