Hello Friends,

Back after a long break with another project. My next project is a "Simple Audio Rack" having 5 Nos shelf. This rack will be made from Teak Wood Blocks (pillars) and Plywood. Below are some 3D images of my design made with CAD program.

The 4 pillars are teak wood blocks which will be of 1 mtr (1000 mm) height. I will stain these pillars to make them look dark and cover them completely with clear coat of Malamine with spray gun.

The plywood used for shelf will be covered by laminate on top & sides, bottom side will be painted with black color. My budget will be around Rs. 5,500/- (excluding labor)

Cost Break Up :
Teak Wood : Rs 1,100/-
Laminate : Rs. 1,300/-
Plywood 18 mm : Rs. 1,400/- ( For 6ft x 4 ft Sheet)
And Another Rs 1,500 to 1,700 for Cutting, Color, Glue, Screws, Sand Papers etc.

Do you think adding small rectangular notches at the rear end center of the plates (something like below picture) will help in managing the connectors/cables in case the rack is kept touching the wall or some hard surface. Just a thought which came across.

Very Nice Idea. I will use this in my built. Instead of sharp corners i will make them curvy.
 
I wouldn't use screws, they'll spoil the look, just glue dowels on the inside, it'll be just as strong and look more accomplished.

You are right, but I may need to test my skills on using dowels.
 
If you can try putting sharp feet at the bottom of the rack. You can check out the look of the racks at soundfoundations. You can also buy the rivets from him (magma) the owner of soundfoundations as it will help with vibrations and also from a look perspective.

I can make feets myself. They can be fitted after completion of Rack. May be later I will make the feets Just like Spikes.

I don't think using caster wheels is good idea. The rack will not be stable and keep on moving here and there. I have two options in mind, either to use rubber feet or spikes.

There are 5 shelf's at equispaced distance. The gap between each shelf is 183 mm which i think is more than enough for any Audio Gear to fit inside. (Apart from some "Class A" amplifiers)
 
Keep it neat and simple

I would keep about 9 inches height to have higher crossflow of air and try to reduce total number of shelves.

The lowest component will be heaviest. So keep the height maximum and progressively reduce height allowing for at least 3 inch ventilation on all sides including from top of audio gear to roof of each section

I will make bottom shelf of 10 Inch height & will use it to place my Class A Amp on it, I will adjust the difference in other shelfs, where I will place my other Audio Gears having less height & weight.

Castors are convenient but not really suited for audio racks. Most audio racks one can buy come with spike footers or bearing ball based footers.

Today I reworked on design and as per suggestions received from our Forum Members I have made some changes on this rack. Below are the new photos of 3D work done in my CAD program.

Modified the shelf to manage the cables on back side. (As suggested by our member Mr. Vipul Patel)

For cable management, drill 1inch dia hole towards the back corners (both sides) leaving 1inch from the edges and run a PVC pipe from top to bottom. Two holes on each corner one for the power and one for interconnects. ;)

I don't think it will be a good idea to run PVC pipe from top to bottom, it will spoil the look. Secondly with just 1 inch dia hole it will be difficult to pass the power cables through it.

If some ambient lighting could be added using LED strips, it may look cool. just an opinion.

Got the shelf. The cutting is done on CNC machine. They are 19 mm thick.

This will be my first experience of working with laminate. Cutting & gluing work will start tomorrow.

Thanks Sefan for your kind words for helping me out on video call. But I will still stick with Screws. It will be easy for me to dismantle it is there is a need to do so.
 
This is my first experience working with laminate & it is really going well. Yesterday I have cutted the laminate sheets as per sizes and glued them with Plywood. I didn't had any idea that it will turn out to be so easy (oly with proper tools and little bit of skills).

I let it dry overnight and flushed the borders with router in morning.

I have completed two shelf today. It cannot be called as completed because the cutted edges are yet to be laminated. So back on work now.
