After joining this group recently, I had started a thread asking for advice on 42/46/47 LCD/Plasma TVs. I had got some useful feedback on the models available in the market, some of the good dealers/distributors in Bangalore etc.
Following that, I visited a few showrooms and tried to gather as much information possible on various brands and models (that I thought were good) and their approximate prices. Here is a summary:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brand Model screen size/type Price (range) My summary on the model
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sony W550 40/ LCD 85-90 k Good PQ, over-priced in terms features, readily available

Sony W550 46/ LCD 105-110 k Good PQ, over-priced in terms features, readily available

Samsung UA40B6000 40/ LED 84-90 k Very good PQ, great looks and features, can play almost all audio/video formats
(including mkv) from USB flash/ HDD, readily available in all stores

Samsung UA46B6000 46/ LED 100-105 k Very good PQ, great looks and features, can play almost all audio/video formats
(including mkv) from USB flash/ HDD, readily available in all stores

Samsung UA46B7000 46/ LED 100-105 k Very good PQ, great looks and features, can play almost all audio/video formats
(including mkv) from USB flash/ HDD, over-priced compared to B6000 for the additional features (AN connectivity & Internet TV), available in select stores

Samsung LA46B650 46/ LCD 85-90 k Very good PQ (though not as good as LED series), lack some good to have features
but overall a very good TV, not easily available in market

LG 42LH90QR 42/ LED 68-73 k Very good PQ (close to Sam LEDs), average looks but great features, can play almost
all audio/video formats (but not mkv) from USB flash/ HDD, very few available in some
select stores (Croma, Reliance Digital, LG Best Shoppe)

LG 47LH90QR 47/ LED 80-90 k Very good PQ (close to Sam LEDs), average looks but great features, can play almost
all audio/video formats (but not mkv) from USB flash/ HDD , execelllent VFM model
but NOT available anywhere

Panasonic TH-P42G10 42/ Plasma 64-68 k Good PQ (not great for SD but very good for HD), reasonably priced, available in
select stores only

Panasonic TH-P50V10D 50/ Plasma 128-138 k Excellent PQ (good for SD and excellent for HD), slightly over-priced, available in select
stores only, undoubtedly the best available 50 plasma currently available in India,
power consumption (530 W) can be an issue for some users

Panasonic TH-50PY850D 50/ Plasma 115-125 k Excellent PQ (good for SD and excellent for HD), though contrast levels slightly lower
than V10, decently priced, though not a new (2009) model, still a very good buy, available
in select stores only, power consumption (530 W) can be an issue for some users
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are in Bangalore and want to buy a Plasma, Modern World (Domlur) is a very good place. As I found out they are one of the very few places (in Bangalore) who actually promote Panasonic plasmas and keep stock of all the new/popular Panasonic models.

Myself (80k budget) and my friend (1.25 L budget) have zeroed down on the below models:
Myself: LG 42LH90QR vs. Samsung UA40B6000 vs. Panasonic TH-P42G10
My friend: Samsung UA46B6000 vs. Panasonic TH-P50V10D vs. Panasonic TH-50PY850D

Can anyone with knowledge/experience on these models enlighten us on what would be the best choice in the above 2 category?

Re: Best 40-50" LCD & PLASMA TVs

Sorry to add to your confusion, Since you are now looking at the samsungs and also have access to a shop who keeps stock of all new plasmas, I recommend you have a look at Samsung PS50B550 which is a 50" 1080p plasma panel for ~75k. Its better than panasonics with SD with little bit lesser black levels for HD and great colour reproduction.

Some members in the forum say that they are not available currently.. But if you can get one, that is an excellent choice.

It was available when I enquired, But was out of my budget..

Reviews,

Samsung Plasma Review - PN50B550 at Plasma TV Buying Guide

Samsung PN50B550 Reviews

Note: PN50B550 is US varient of PS50B550.

I saw one listed on ebay yesterday but the dealer displays MRP for all samsung models there and listed it for 1L. Not a good deal. But for 75K, It is an excellent deal.

Check out.

Re: Best 40-50" LCD & PLASMA TVs

Blasto,
Completely agree on the VFM quotient of PS50B550. No one seems to have any stock of this. Sometime in October while browsing through the Samsung India web-site, I saw this model and started enquiring about it. So far no dealer has given me any hope. Recently (late November) Samsung has removed this model from their web-site. They now show only 4 & 6 series plasmas.

I demoed the PS50B450 (50" 4 Series 720p) @ my collegues' house very recently and was amazed at it capability. I was a bit sceptic with 50" having 720p resolution until I saw this TV. The contrast was same as the 42" I saw in addagalla's house with same picture quality just bigger. I was wondering how samsungs pulled this up. Apparently the 50" have higher horizontal pixel count.

He got it for 57k recently but I have seen members quoting 55k in the price thread. But getting it is entirely your decision since it is in a lower price range than your budget.

IMO, Samsungs are miles ahead in image processing and it is quite evident in home auditions with crappy DTHs. If SD is your primary viewing, give a strong look at samsungs and as opposed to panasonics (which I have'nt auditioned yet at home). You won't repent.

It is also wise to wait for 2010 1080p plasma samsung models since you have the budget. I don't have any idea of their release cycle, but I persume a feb timeframe.

Re: Best 40-50" LCD & PLASMA TVs

I am willing to wait till Feb if I know for sure that a full HD 50" Plasma from Samsung will be available below 1 L price ...
A colleague of mine waited for 3 months for PS50B550 before finally settling for Panasonic PY850D (50"). I actually spoke to the Modern World guy who had shown me the Panasonic models - just to share with you all, they had the maximum plasma models on display, more than in any showroom I have ever been to - he had C10, X10 (42" & 50"), S10 (42" & 50"), G10 (42"), PY850D (50"), V10 (50"). I asked him about the Samsung Plasmas in general and this model (PS50B550) in particular and he said he would call me back. After about an hour he called me back and told - Samsung has more or less stopped supplying plasmas because of poor sale/response and it is unlikely that they would start supplying anything (on Plasma) soon.

Back to my original query:
Myself (80k budget) and my friend (1.25 L budget) have zeroed down on the below models:
Myself: LG 42LH90QR vs. Samsung UA40B6000 vs. Panasonic TH-P42G10

Thanks, Blasto!!
The eZone page actually says "temporarily sold out" on the right corner of the page.
I will checkout the other two suppliers and see if I get lucky here ...

Yourself -
Advantages-G10
1080 lines of motion, good blacks, minimal input lag
Disadvantage
Obviously power,SD and not suitable for bright rooms
Advantages LG
Blacks, colour, calibration options, non reflective matte screen(suitable for bright rooms unlike the samsungs) and good SD performance.
Disadvantage
Motion,input lag.viewing angle, blooming

Personally G10>LH90>B6000. But there are plenty of LH90 owners here who are happy with their TVs. The B6000 has far too many disadvantages for me to personally recommend it.

Based on the same observations i would say the V10 or the PY850. Though the 850 was a good model i think for another 10k the V10 might just give you a better sense of satisfaction. A few better specs on paper overall and a neo PDP panel with possibly slightly poorer SD. Also i don't think there are a lot of reviewers who believe the 850 is better than the V10

Re: Best 40-50" LCD & PLASMA TVs

the samsung B550 plasma is EOL in india.its taken of thier website, even when it was available it was rare.

in the lcds the B650 which ain't avialable easily PQ is pretty much the same as W550A.
the B6000 will give u that extra dynamic contrast, which makes u feel that their is more depth in picture, even when comparing to the LG LH90 with local dimming.

Samsung UA46B7000 46/ LED 100-105 k ....

.........

whoo!!! which dealer is selling this model at this price.???? Info please.
-- Blame it on copy-paste syndrome. UA46B7000 price is 125-130 k.

aneelr/ Gfreeman,
In all likelihood, I am going to go for either LH90 or G10. If 47" LH90 was available, I would have settled for that, but unformtunately only 42" LH90 is available in one or two places.
The only other model I am considering (mostly out of stock, but some online dealers are offering it online), going by Blasto's advice - is Samsung Plasma PS50B550 - for 75-80 k, this (50" 1080p plasma) surely looks to be a great choice.

You won't most probably find a Samsung 50b550. Though not full HD, b450 plasma is pretty good. I bought it last month and I still recommend it over LG & panny plasmas. Panny (for example, x10 or c10) would have been the best plasma, but it's out of the box PQ is not impressive and SD processing is not as good as sammy or LG. I guess only people who were planning to get it professionally calibrated can go for x10 or c10.

Add to that Sammy is better than LG in SD primarily due to black levels. Auditioned Samsung 50B450 and 42PQ70 both with TATA sky 'today' at two different homes.

Samsung is slightly better in normal lighting,
AND samsung is considerably better in dark!!

You have more reason to believe me because I own an LG 42PQ60.

If I were to pickup a TV today, It will be 50B450 or 50B550.

Panasonics are best panels but SD image processing falls short of samsung/LG is what I read in the internet. I cannot have any home audition of panasonics yet (which is wierd) and hence could not confirm.

Blasto,
I contacted The dealer (from Bangalore, who had put up a PS50B550 on sale in compareindia.com) you gave me the details of. He said he had sold off the last piece of PS50B550. He then said he would check with his friends (fellow dealers) to see if any of them has any stock of this model. Evening he called me to say nobody he knows in Bangalore has this model. So there goes PS50B550 ....
I guess my choices are now limited to -
LG LH90 - 47" (not likely available)/ 42" (if anything is left till 1st week of Jan)
Pana G10

I am dropping Samsung UAXXB6000 after reading some of the comments about it though I must say in the Reliance Digital showroom when I tried comparing it with LH90 (42") - I saw TataSky on both, then played same DVD (from same player) on them and finally plugged a flash drive - I found the Samsung model to be slightly better - also liked the fact it could play mkv files.
But this is not good enough reason and is contradictory to my own experiene earlier. Sometime in Nov I tried 42LH90 & UA40B6000 side by side and thought LH90 was better.

Anyway, thanks to all of you for your inputs. Though I haven't finalized the model now, I have narrowed down my choice with your inputs. I am going out of station (Kolkata) tomorrow and will be back on 3rd Jan. Most likely I will buy a new TV on or before 10th Jan :).

Friends,
A small piece of information that may be of interest to some of you.
As you had seen reading this thread, I was keen on 47LH90QR of LG (47 LED backlit model), but almost gave up as no dealer had any stock of this. I sent a mail 2 days back to LG service asking them to let me know if 47LH90 can be arranged from any of their dealers in Bangalore. Today morning someone from LG India Marketing (Deputy Manager, LG India, in-charge of Bangalore) called me to say that:
LG has stopped production of the LH90QR model
They had been working on launching a newer and improved version of the LH90 LED-backlit model
They now have a new model ready for launch, it will be available with most LG dealers this weekend (26th Dec.)
The new model no. is XXSL90QR, will be available in 42 & 47
This will be much sleeker with better features (according to him)
The approximate street-price (he gave this info after a lot of persuasion) will be about 1.06 L for the 47SL90QR (47) model

Since I have anyway waited for so long (& was quite impressed with the PQ & features of the LH90 model + have seen some good feedback on this in this forum), I will wait to audition this new LG model and see if it is worth its price but that will happen only during the week starting 4th January (as I am going out of station today). In case any of you (in Bangalore/Chennai/Mumbai) happen to audition this model before that, please share your inputs.

saumitra,

don't mean to disappoint u but SL90 isn't considered an improvement over the LH90.. SL90 is an edge lit LED LCD TV similar to the Samsung LED models.. here's a review on CNET in which it is considered inferior to the Samsung.. another review is expected shortly from avforums..

LG SL9000 (42SL9000) Review on CNET UK

avforums owners thread (could have links to other reviews as well):
The official LG SL9000 LED TV thread - AVForums.com

the SL80, which is normal CCFL backlit LCD, is however getting good reviews.. here are a couple..
